According to current information, many countries in Asia have begun to plan their reopening, or have already reopened to tourism.

Asia has had strict borders and closures since the outbreak of the Kovid-19 epidemic.  With the reopening of borders, Europe has moved forward and Asian countries are moving forward with a more cautious approach to domestic travel.

Plans reopen delayed

Sri Lanka has delayed reopening several times throughout 2020.

In its latest announcement, Sri Lanka says it will reopen on December 26, 2020.

Following multiple delays, Sri Lanka plans to reopen its borders for tourism from the last week of 2020.

President of Sri Lanka ‘Gotabhaya Rajapaksa’ has given the opportunity to proceed with the reopening of the International Airport on December 26, 2020.


Not yet open for general tourism By May 20, 2020, the travel ban in Cambodia was lift.

Until further notice, Cambodia has suspended e-visa and visa-based arrivals, and entry will still be difficult as travel-related services will be suspended until June 10.

They have also added these extra stringent requirements.

Admission requirements for authorized countries:

  • COVID-19 negative medical certificate issued no more than 72 hours prior to the date of travel
  • Upon arrival in Cambodia, health authorities require all travelers to undergo a COVID-19 test and wait to receive the laboratory results.
  • Some travelers have reported waiting 24 hours in stark conditions while test results were process.
  • Travelers will have to self-isolate for 14-days at their home under supervision of local authorities.
  • Another COVID-19 test will be require on the 13th day of self-isolation


Partial reopening of airspace

By September 3, 2020, China will allow tourists from eight countries to enter the country under strict requirements.

Tourists from Thailand, Cambodia, Pakistan, Greece, Denmark, Austria, Sweden and Canada can visit Beijing but must be test and quarantine.

Tourists must be able to qualify for a visa to visit China, and the country is not yet open to normal tourism.

The reopening of Bali to foreign tourists may be delayed until the end of 2020

Minister of Maritime Affairs and Investment Coordinating Minister ‘Lus Binsar Panjaitan’ has stated that the reopening of Bali could be delay until the end of 2020.

Earlier, the Governor of Bali announced that the island would reopen its borders for international tourism on September 11, 2020.

Admission Requirements: All travelers to Bali will be require to bring a Cove Negative Kovid-19 test; otherwise they will be test at their own expense.

Allowed countries: Not published

The Indonesian government has not yet released further details on the reopening of the border.

News Update:

Bali will not be open to international tourism until the end of 2020, Governor Wayne Coaster said at a news conference.

The Governor of Bali initially announce that the island would officially open its borders to international tourism on September 11, 2020, but it was cancel by the Indonesian government and delay until the end of the year.

Plans to reopen are now officially delay until the end of 2020.

The Governor of Bali has signed a new decree on the ‘new era of life’ regulating the reopening of the Bali economy.

The order states that the third phase will cover a wide range of tourism activities, including the reopening of Bali to international tourism.

The announcement came at the end of a large prayer service in Bali seeking God’s permission, blessing, guidance and protection.


 It is planned to reopen soon for tourism

Since it has been closed to foreigners since March, Japan is currently planning to reopen its international stage, announcing the countries it wants to deregulate first.

By the end of 2020, there are several nationalities that can visit Japan.

According to the Japanese government, they plan to reopen the border first:

  • Thailand
  • Vietnam
  • Malaysia
  • Cambodia
  • Laos
  • Myanmar
  • Taiwan
  • Singapore
  • Brunei
  • Republic of Korea
  • China

First, Japan intends to reopen to business travelers, investors and essential visitors from the above countries, then to students and finally to the general public.

Access Requirements:

All arrivals are subject to 14-day quarantine.

However, the Japanese government has stated that tourists who receive a PCR test within 72 hours of arrival and agree to perform another test upon arrival can bypass the 14-day quarantine, both tests being positive.

Reopen for tourism

Kyrgyzstan officially opened for tourism on August 21, allowing foreigners to visit selected countries again after the border was closed in March.

The list of 31 countries allowed to visit does not require mandatory inspections and quarantines, but the government says a PCR test is ‘recommended’.

Now among the countries that can be visited: Russia, UK, China, Pakistan, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and many European countries.


Not yet open for general tourism

As of July 22, Malaysia is making exceptions for certain types of tourists to enter the country.

Malaysia has closed its borders to international tourism since March, and the current border closure is not set to expire on August 31, but there are now a number of ways for selected tourists to enter.

As of July 1, Malaysia has allowed medical tourists to enter the country.  It is a good way to slowly restart a part of the tourism industry and at the same time allows tourists to invest directly into the country.

The government has agreed to allow patients in designated green zone countries to enter Malaysia for treatment.  As of July 21, the current green zone countries are: So

  • Brunei
  • Singapore
  • South Korea
  • Japan
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
